Romania flood Danube breaks through

Disaster Romania: Waters from the swollen Danube River broke through several dikes flooding houses and forcing more villagers to flee their homes in southern Romania.

The rains stopped, but high waters caused damage to villages and towns along the Danube, which marks the border with Bulgaria, Romanian authorities said.

Dams cannot hold the ravaging Danube, swollen by melting snow and heavy rains, said the Bucharest Daily News Wednesday.

Villagers moved into makeshift shelters on higher ground after a protective dike was damaged by the flood waters at Spantov. Several dams in southeastern part of the country collapsed Tuesday and more people had to be evacuated.

Over the past few weeks more than 9,500 have been resettled at their relatives, in schools and in tent cities, a Romanian Interior Ministry official told Rompres, the national press agency.

Flooding has affected 148 settlements in 12 counties, with 3,819 farms flooded and 848 houses heavily damaged, the ministry said. Nearly 150 bridges and more than 300 miles of roads were damaged.
