More image overlays on maps - this time with MS Live Local and Mapcruncher

Sector 2 PUGI have been experimenting with MapCruncher. You can see a work in progress by clicking on the image or following this link: Plan Urbanistic General for Sector 2 Bucharest overlaid on a Microsoft Live Local street map of Bucharest. What is Mapcruncher? Basically a desktop application with which you load up 1. a Microsoft Map in real time and 2. an image from your hard drive. You then get the image to overlay the map by plotting matching points - the program takes care of stretching or shrinking the image to fit the map projection - not just in x-y but a varied stretch over the whole image like stretching a rubber sheet - it is really quite straightforward once you get into it but a little difficult to explain succintly. What is very impressive is that it takes care of all of the cutting and positioning of tiles for larger images to allow faster zooming/panning - I will definitely be playing more with this in the future...Take-aways from this:1. Local Live (local.live.com) has street maps for Bucharest (!) (although no street search...but maybe [:)] there are already solutions to this)2. Mapcruncher is really quick to get into - and because it takes care of matching different or skewed projections it is a very quick way of getting into mashups.3. just because something is Microsoft does not necessarily prevent it from being cool...
